Aging and Sexual Health

Sexual health remains an important aspect of individual and relational well-being throughout later adulthood. However, myths and age-based assumptions can lead professionals to overlook sexual-health concerns affecting older adults and their partners.

This one-hour self-study course examines sexual health in the post-reproductive years through a biopsychosocial framework. Participants will review normative age-related changes in sexual activity and functioning; the impact of chronic illness affecting the individual or partner; and the potential effects of medications and urinary incontinence. The course also examines psychosocial, relational, and environmental influences, including partner availability, embarrassment, and living or care setting.

Emphasis is placed on respectful, non-assumptive communication and the importance of asking older adults about sexual health and potential sexual risk rather than assuming that they are not sexually active. The course is designed to strengthen the ability of social workers, psychologists, mental health counselors, and marriage and family therapists to recognize and discuss sexual-health concerns in later life within their professional scope.

 

About the Presenter

Dr. Anna Woloski-Wruble, EdD, RN, is a senior lecturer (research) at the Faculty of Medicine and a senior member of the Henrietta Szold Hadassah–Hebrew University School of Nursing. As a nurse- midwife and sexual health clinician, her research focuses on sexual and relationship health across the lifespan, sexual health education, and sexual adjustment to illness. She has published extensively, chairs the doctoral program, and mentors graduate student research. She serves on institutional committees including the ethics committee. Her clinical practice includes individuals and couples across the lifespan and health illness continuum and advances culturally sensitive sexuality education initiatives.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Differentiate common myths about sexuality and aging from normative changes in sexual activity and functioning in later adulthood.
  2. Identify physical, psychosocial, relational, and environmental factors that may affect sexual health in later life, including chronic illness, medication effects, urinary incontinence, partner availability, and care setting.
  3. Select a respectful, non-assumptive approach to discussing sexual health and potential sexual risk with older adult clients

Completion Requirements

To receive continuing education credit, participants must complete the full instructional portion of the course, achieve the required passing score on the post-test, and submit the course evaluation. A certificate of completion will be issued after all requirements have been met.
